Easter Bunnies

The Swiss take their Easter Bunnies seriously! This is the selection from "Coop", one of the markets here. Migros also has a pirate bunny and a baby bunny, complete with pacifier, among others.

Another Alphorn Ad

This one advertises a super deal to travel by train to Paris. It says, "Paris is worth more than just a look." I just had to put it in!

You can't fight heredity

Anyone who knows Sue's Mom's Swiss name is Howald, and knows how Sue likes old things will enjoy this picture of Max Howald's Antique Shop. The words over the entrance translate roughly as "Happy Old Things".

Architecture

It would use up many memory cards to take pictures of all the beautiful old buildings in Bern. This one is across the street from the Migros grocery store where we shop. I thought I would take a picture of it before it is hidden by trees.

This is the view from the front. Do you see the wires that go from the left of the gate to the balcony on the top floor? Whoever lives there has a basket, puts their groceries in it at the bottom, goes up to the top and reels the basket up!

"Alphorns" and Ads

Couldn't pass up this billboard, advertising a Swiss brand of salad dressing.

Street Sweeping in Bern

This is how they sweep the streets. Notice the style of broom they use. You can buy the "head" for about $4 on sale. I don't know how they attach it to the handle. I like the contrast of the old style way of doing things in front of a Tanning Salon!

Here is part of the street sweeping crew. He is sweeping up the "Streugut", literally "scattering stuff." They don't use much salt, preferring instead this small gravel. Then, at the end of the season, they sweep it up and deposit it in boxes spaced along the streets, ready to use for next year.

Meet Karl and Erika Stussi of the Bern Ward

Karl is almost 92, Erika is 86. Now very hard of hearing, he sits up front to catch as much as he can, and sings the hymns vigorously as he peers through a magnifying glass at the words. After the meeting, he helps put away the sacrament trays while Erika hastens to greet a new member. They have been faithfully serving since they joined the church in the 1950's, with their three little boys. They are a legend among the many they have lifted and helped over the last 50+ years. His eyes light up when he talks of his experiences when he served in the temple. As one member said, they are "rocks!"
